When I was nearly 12 years old we moved to my current community in SouthEast Louisiana. The move was a huge geographical & cultural change from our longtime home in Southern California. My siblings and I were ready to embark in a new journey. We were kids, so starting over for us was not a big ordeal at all. But for my mother, things were a little bit harder. One thing my mother lacked was community. We were there for her, but what she needed was her peers (other Latinas) to be near her so she can have an easier transition. Although she didn’t have the community she may have needed at the time, she eventually found her way in our new area and overcame any stereotypes or prejudices she may have encountered in the process. My mother’s ability to adapt is something I always admired in her. She was independent, strong and proud & not afraid to let the world know it.
Recently I was introduced to the Mujeres con La Falda Bien Puesta Community which means-women “with their skirts well positioned”. Orgullosa is a site that offers Latinas a platform to connect with peers in daily conversations & the ability to contribute to a bigger community. Orgullosa is a destination that focuses on the everyday Latina, content and solutions she may need to help better her busy lifestyle. Orgullosa women are also independent, strong, and proud. One thing the Orgullosa community differs from others is that we are not afraid to let the world know who we are and what our full potential is.
My 12 year old daughter is coming to understand who she is and what kind of woman she is. Today, I asked her what her favorite trait about me is. Please understand that when you ask a question like that, you NEVER know what kind of answer your going to get. But she told me that what she admired most about me is that I am not afraid to voice my opinion. She likes that I feel comfortable discussing issues with others whether they pertain to me or others. I was so excited to hear that from her. But what really got me was when she said…”I hope I can speak up for myself when I get older”. Awwwww But then I realized she’s 12….she speaks up for herself whether I like it or not!
